“Try rolling your tongue a bit more, lad,” said Joshamee Gibbs, trying not to sound frustrated. The boy just wasn’t getting it. “Start with the ‘ah’ then tuck your tongue right into the roof of your mouth for the ’rrr’.”
“Urrrrrr….” said Will, sounding a bit like a Frenchman gargling on cologne.
Gibbs sighed and rubbed his hand over his chin. Time for a different tack.
“Right, let’s try some phrases, shall we? Forget about the pronunciation for now.”
The boy nodded eagerly.
Gibbs furrowed his brow and said in a growling voice, “Avast, ye scurvy dogs or I’ll scupper ye with me pistol!”
“Avast, you scurvy…” began Will but stopped as Gibbs waved his hands and shook his head.
“No, lad, try not to sound so…so…” He searched for the right word. “…so virtuous. It be a pirate you‘re trying to sound like, mind. Not Commodore Norrington.”
“It’s no good, Gibbs. I’ll never get the hang of talking like a pirate,” said Will and looked so dejected that Gibbs clapped a consolatory hand on his shoulder. “It’d probably take years of practicing and I just don’t think I’m cut out for it. Besides,” he continued, with a frown, “I don’t know why anyone in their right mind would even want to talk like a pirate unless they were trying to impress one.”
“FULL CANVAS, YE POX RIDDEN BILGERATS! ALL HANDS TO QUARTERS, LEST IT BE A TASTE OF THE CAT YE BE WANTIN!” roared a coarse, but distinctly female voice from across the deck, before turning to the grinning man sitting next to her. “Is that the sort of thing you mean, Jack?”
“Perfect, love. It’s like you were born to be a pirate,” came the reply.
A twitch appeared in the corner of Will’s eye and he breathed deeply.
“So, Gibbs, you say I should roll my tongue a bit more…?”
