In which Bush is a Fanny (how apt)...

So George Bush has decided that the survivors of Katrina aren't getting the help they need and that this was 'unacceptable'. No fucking kidding, George! You think that, for example, 20 000 people living in a fucking airport is unacceptable? Hmmm, and here's me thinking it's recreating a holiday atmosphere. You think a 90 year old woman sleeping on a luggage trolley for a week is unacceptable? Yeah, I'm thinking its capturing the nostalgia of World War 2.

This is the fucking 21st century, Mr President, and you represent on of the most affluent civilisations in the world, but you can let one of your states turn into the equivalent of a third world country before bringing in aid?

Like the rest of the world I've watched open mouthed at the horrendous conditions the people of New Orleans have had to live in since the beginning of this disaster and I've had trouble reconciling these images with the idea that the USA takes care of its own.

Certain cards have been brandished since this started and I would hate to grant any credence to the claims that are being made. I refuse to believe that race plays any part in the aid that is being given to New Orleans. But then again I'm a middle class white chick from a country 5000 miles away so maybe I'm being naive. Still I hope that race is not influencing the US governments decision to send aid to the region and I hope that the military presence is there to offer assistance and not enforce some ridiculous half assed idea of martial law. The people of New Orleans need real help from the country to which they pledge allegiance. Good intentions can only go so far.

Friday at work, we were listening to NPR in my office near the end of the day, and Bush made his lil speech before leaving NOLA. And when he said, "I get it, I get that is going to take more than a day's attention."

Every person in the room burst into spontaneous laughter. Mostly because we were trying not to cry that we were stuck with some a bungling moron.

Dude, at LEAST look better in the media. If you can't do jack shit for the victims, stop actively looking like a moron. *headdesk till I bleed*

This is why I'm glad I speak to Americans on LJ because I'd hate to have to rely on that asshole as a representative of your country.

I swear the man has absolute zero self awareness. I don't think he understands that spin can only take him so far.

It would be nice if it wasn't age, and I think in a way it's actually more about money, but it's hard to ignore that most people you see out there are black or hispanic.

Yes it is. I really want to argue that that sort of racism is not so deep rooted that it can stop aid being given to the people who need it most but its hard to argue against what's staring you right in the face.

But in truth I don't know which is worse - the government deliberately adopting a 'lalalanotlistening' stance because 1/3 of the population are black or the government being caught with its head up its ass and simply finding itself totally unfuckingprepared to deal with a catastrophe on this scale.

Whichever way you look at it, the picture painted is of a shameful fuck up on an epic scale.
